Described first from the same specimens by Randall 1975 as declivis. •Wrongly valid as Chaetodon declevis Burgess & Randall 1978 -- (Yamakawa & Tameka in Okamura et al. 1982:250 [ref. 8256]). •Objective synonym of Chaetodon declivis Randall 1975 -- (Allen 1980:162 [ref. 22764]). Current status: Synonym of Chaetodon declivis Randall 1975. Chaetodontidae: Chaetodontinae.

E.] 1975:16, Pl. 3 (fig. 3) [Uo (Japanese Society of Ichthyologists) No. 25; ref. 7464] Off point at northern side of Hanauu Bay, Fatu Hiva, Marquesas Islands, depth 23 meters. Holotype: BPBM 11734. Paratypes: BPBM 11733 (2), CAS 33467 [ex BPBM 11777] (1), MNHN 1975-0695 [ex BPBM 11777] (1), USNM 214674 [ex BPBM 11777] (1). Also appeared as new as Burgess & Randall in Burgess 1978 as declevis; based on the same specimens. •Valid as Chaetodon declivis Randall 1975 -- (Allen 1980:162 [ref. 22764], Blum 1989:13 [ref. 37553], Myers 1999:166 [ref. 23965], Randall & Earle 2000:15 [ref. 25806], Pyle 2001:3239 [ref. 26117], Smith et al. 2003:304 [ref. 27125], Randall 2005:312 [ref. 28239], Delrieu-Trottin et al. 2015:6 [ref. 33988]). Current status: Valid as Chaetodon declivis Randall 1975. Chaetodontidae: Chaetodontinae. Distribution: Western and central Pacific. Habitat: marine.

L.] 1988:56, Fig. 1 [Freshwater and Marine Aquarium v. 11 (no. 9); ref. 6613] Northwestern side of Christmas [Kiritimati] Island, 0.25 miles southwest of North London Resettlement Area, Line Islands, Pacific. Holotype: BPBM 31936. Paratypes: AMS I.27263-001 (1); BPBM 31892 (1), 31961 (1), 31963 (4); CAS 62451 (4); MNHN 1988-0256 (1); USNM 291692 (4). •Synonym of Chaetodon declivis Randall 1975, but a valid subspecies as described -- (Randall 2005:312 [ref. 28239]). Current status: Synonym of Chaetodon declivis Randall 1975. Chaetodontidae: Chaetodontinae.
