Based on Chimaera purpurescens Gilbert 1905, not regarded as preoccupied by C. purpurascens Jordan & Snyder 1904:235 [ref. 2519] -- the later without distinguishing features. Therefore an unneeded replacement name. •Objective synonym of Hydrolagus purpurescens (Gilbert 1905) -- (Didier 1995:15 [ref. 22713], Mundy 2005:86 [ref. 28379], Dyldin 2015:78 [ref. 34524]). Current status: Synonym of Hydrolagus purpurescens (Gilbert 1905). Chimaeridae. Habitat: marine.

Fish Commission v. 23 (pt 2) [for 1903]; ref. 1631] Vicinity of Kauai Island, Hawaiian Islands, Albatross station 4183, depth 957-1067 fathoms. Holotype (unique): USNM 51594 [not 51592]. Not regarded as preoccupied by use of this name as purpurascens by Jordan & Snyder 1904:235 [ref. 2519]; Chimaera gilberti Garman 1911 is therefore regarded as an unneeded replacement.
