Type by subsequent designation. Appeared first in Bleeker 1861:70 [ref. 12601] as "Pseudoscarus psittacus Blkr." name only; apparently Bleeker was referring to Scarus psittacus" of earlier authors. In 1861:240 [ref. 381] Bleeker referred to Scarus psittacus Cantor, while including 41 species in Pseudoscarus. If Pseudoscarus 1861:70 is regarded as available, then the type is psittacus by monotypy; otherwise, type designated by Jordan & Evermann 1898:1655 [ref. 2444]. But Kottelat (2013) states the species is misidentified, and the type is Pseudoscarus cantori Bleeker 1861. •Synonym of Chlorurus Swainson 1839 -- (Bellwood 1994:66 [ref. 19116], Parenti & Randall 2000:52 [ref. 24943]). •Synonym of Scarus Forsskål 1775 -- (Kottelat 2013:381 [ref. 32989]).
