Holotype (unique): NMW 32597. •Synonym of Pseudocrenilabrus philander (Weber 1897) subspecies dispersus (Trewavas 1936) -- (Skelton 1991:396 [ref. 20950]). •Synonym of Tilapia sparrmanii Smith 1840 -- (Teugels & Thys van den Audenaerde 1991:501 [ref. 20943], Seegers 1996:327 [ref. 23725]). Current status: Synonym of Tilapia sparrmanii Smith 1840. Cichlidae: Pseudocrenilabrinae. Habitat: freshwater.

ovalis, Heliastes Steindachner [F.] 1900:176 [Anzeiger der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften, Wien, Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Classe v. 37 (no. 16) (for 21 June 1900); ref. 20498] Honolulu, Oahu Island, Hawaiian Islands. Holotype (unique): UMB 158 [RK UMB 4626]. Type catalog: Wahlert 1955:324 [ref. 21527]. Species later described in detail in Steindachner 1900 [or 1901]:502 [ref. 14892]; on p. 20 of separate. Technical secondary preoccupation by Chromis ovalis Steindachner 1866 was removed in 1990 by Opinion 1622. Original genus should have been Heliases. •Valid as Chromis ovalis (Steindachner 1900) -- (Randall & Follett 1989 [ref. 13575], Allen 1991:240 [ref. 19344], Mundy 2005:427 [ref. 28379], Randall 2007:306 [ref. 30952], Parenti 2021:56 [ref. 38418], Prokofiev & Astakhov 2023:369 [ref. 40186]). Current status: Valid as Chromis ovalis (Steindachner 1900). Pomacentridae: Chrominae. Distribution: Central Pacific Ocean: Hawaiian Islands (U.S.A.) endemic. Habitat: marine.

velox, Chromis Jenkins [O. P.] 1901:393, Fig. 6 [Bulletin of the U. S. Fish Commission v. 19 (1899); ref. 2340] Honolulu, Oahu Island, Hawaiian Islands. Holotype: USNM 49698. Paratypes: CAS-SU 5995 (1), 23293 (2), 23309 (3). Type catalog: Böhlke 1953:82-83 [ref. 12291]. Type series apparently consists of 5 specimens (see p. 393). The figured specimen, listed as the type, can be considered as the holotype if that specimen is identifiable. •Synonym of Chromis ovalis (Steindachner 1900) -- (Randall & Follett 1989:848 [ref. 13575], Allen 1991:240 [ref. 19344], Mundy 2005:427 [ref. 28379], Parenti 2021:56 [ref. 38418]). Current status: Synonym of Chromis ovalis (Steindachner 1900). Pomacentridae: Chrominae. Habitat: marine.
