No types known. •Synonym of Cichlasoma bimaculatum (Linnaeus 1758) -- (Kullander 1983:65 [ref. 8319], Kullander & Nijssen 1989:131 [ref. 14136], Kullander in Reis et al. 2003:622 [ref. 27061]). Current status: Synonym of Cichlasoma bimaculatum (Linnaeus 1758). Cichlidae: Cichlinae. Habitat: freshwater.

gronovii, Acara Heckel [J. J.] 1840:361 [Annalen des Wiener Museums der Naturgeschichte v. 2; ref. 2064] Rivers in Suriname. Syntypes: NMW 33651-52 (1, 1). Based on literature sources. •Synonym of Cichlasoma bimaculatum (Linnaeus 1758) -- (Kullander 1983:65 [ref. 8319], Kullander & Nijssen 1989:131 [ref. 14136], Kullander in Reis et al. 2003:622 [ref. 27061]). Current status: Synonym of Cichlasoma bimaculatum (Linnaeus 1758). Cichlidae: Cichlinae. Habitat: freshwater.

punctatus, Labrus Linnaeus [C.] 1758:285 [Systema Naturae, Ed. X v. 1; ref. 2787] Suriname. Lectotype: NRM 4. Based on two sources: the Gronovius specimen from Suriname is a cichlid, the NHRM specimen is the same as Polycentrus schomburgkii Müller & Troschel 1849 (see Fernholm & Wheeler 1983:252-253 [ref. 20707]); it was designated lectotype by Kullander 1983:84 [ref. 8319]. A petition to the ICZN to suppress Labrus punctatus to conserve Polycentrus schomburgkii was submitted to the ICZN (see Paepke 1993 [ref. 20914]) and Cases 2880 and 2905. Long recognized as valid, but threatened by Labrus puncatatus Linnaeus 1758 as shown by Paepke 1993 [ref. 20914]. Opinion 1954 in June 2000 removed that threat, and P. schomburgkii is to be given precedence over the name Labrus punctatus whenever the two names are considered synonyms. •Synonym (in part) of Cichlasoma bimaculatum (Linnaeus 1758) -- (Kullander 1983:65 [ref. 8319]). •Valid as Polycentrus punctatus (Linnaeus 1758) -- (Keith et al. 2000:144 [ref. 24547]). •Synonym of Polycentrus schomburgkii Müller & Troschel 1849 -- (Britz & Kullander in Reis et al. 2003:603 [ref. 27061], Coutinho & Wosiacki 2014:747 [ref. 33630]). Current status: Synonym of Polycentrus schomburgkii Müller & Troschel 1849. Polycentridae. Habitat: freshwater, brackish.
