Spelled Acantophthalmus in 1823, Acanthophthalmus in French version (= van Hasselt 1824:377 [ref. 5104]); the spelling Acantophthalmus was placed on the Official Index in Opinion 1500. Type by monotypy, 3 more included species not available (see Kottelat 1987:371 [ref. 5962]). •Objective synonym of Cobitis Linnaeus 1758 by action of ICZN (Opinion 1500), but see Burridge 1992:175 [ref. 19452]. •Treated as valid as Acantophthalmus van Hasselt 1823 with type as A. fasciatus -- (Jayaram 1981:179 [ref. 6497], Sawada 1982:202 [ref. 14111], Roberts 1989:95 [ref. 6439], Ataur Rahman 1989:152 [ref. 24860], and Burridge 1992:175 [ref. 19452] as Acantophthalmus). •Opinion 1695 did not support the view of Burridge et al. Type by subsequent designation. Type designated by Swain 1882:281 [ref. 5966]. Spelled Acourus on p. 190 and 436. Jordan 1919:204 [ref. 2410] gave precedence to Acoura. Acura Agassiz 1846:5 [ref. 64] is an unjustified emendation. Swainson's obscura an unneeded replacement for savona Hamilton by indication to Hamilton 1822:357, No. 9 [ref. 2031]. Genus should have been Cobitis. Linck 1790:38 [ref. 4985] described the new genus Barbatula mentioning 'Hierher gehören Cobitis Barbatula Taenia', meaning that two species were included, Cobitis barbatula and Cobitis taenia; barbatula is the type due to absolute tautonymy (ICZN Art. 68.4). Type by subsequent designation. As Diacanthus on p. 190. Eschmeyer 1990:123 serves as first reviser. Swainson's Diacantha zebra is an unneeded name change for Cobitis geto Hamilton.
