Objectively invalid; preoccupied by Cobitis japonica Houttuyn 1782, replaced by Cobitis biwae Jordan & Snyder 1901. •Objective synonym of Cobitis biwae Jordan & Snyder 1901 -- (Sawada & Azizawa 1983:318 [ref. 27179], Kottelat 2012:24 [ref. 32367]). 1°Homonym. Type information: Hayashi 1995 [ref. 22717]. Appeared as nom. nov. for the non-biwae populations of Cobitis taenia japonica Temminck & Schlegel 1846, but biwae was itself a replacement for japonica [WNE, 10 Mar. 2012]. Here regarded as a new subspecies description; see Sawada & Aizawa 1983 [ref. 27179]. •Synonym of Cobitis taenia Linnaeus 1758, but a valid subspecies as described -- (Okada 1961:563 [ref. 6363]). •Valid as Cobitis matsubarae Okada & Ikeda 1939 (often seen as matsubarai) -- (Watanabe 1998:263 [ref. 23491], Nakabo 2000:274 [ref. 25086], Matsuura et al. 2000:165 [ref. 26000], Kitagawa et al. 2001:250 [ref. 25686], Nakabo 2002:274 [ref. 26001], Nakajima 2016:125 [ref. 34247], Chen & Chen 2016:388 [ref. 34890], Tan et al. 2019:172 [ref. 36712]). A substitute name for Cobitis taenia japonica Temminck & Schlegel 1846. An earlier replacement than Cobitis biwae Jordan & Snyder 1901, but not in use in 1899 (see Kottelat 2012:24 [ref. 32367]). •Synonym of Cobitis biwae Jordan & Snyder 1901 -- (Kottelat 2012:24 [ref. 32367]).
