crocodilus, Platycephalus Cuvier [G.] (ex Tilesius) in Cuvier & Valenciennes 1829:256 [Histoire naturelle des poissons v. 4; ref. 998] No locality stated [Nagasaki, Japan]. No types preserved. First available usage of the name Platycephalus crocodilus Tilesius 1814, which was given in cyrillic letters only and not available -- (Imamura & Yoshino 2009:310 [ref. 30527] as crocodila). The specific name is apparently an indeclinable noun, so the correct name is Cociella crocodilus. Platycephalus crocodilus Cuvier 1829 and Platycephalus guttatus Cuvier 1829 are regarded as synonyms and both appeared in the same paper; Imamura & Yoshino 2009:310 [ref. 30527] acted as first revisers to establish precedence of Platycephalus crocodilus Cuvier 1829. •Valid as Cociella crocodilus (Cuvier 1829) [sometimes with author as Tilesius 1812, and often as crocodila] -- (Kyushin et al. 1982:276 [ref. 19754], Dor 1984:89 [ref. 29757], Ochiai in Masuda et al. 1984:322 [ref. 6441], Knapp 1986:483 [ref. 5683], Shao & Chen 1987:87 [ref. 8042], Lindberg & Krasyukova 1987:153 [ref. 15964], Kawanabe & Mizuno 1989:653 [ref. 25598], Kottelat et al. 1993:103 [ref. 23448], Baranes & Golani 1993:305 [ref. 22372], Goren & Dor 1994:23 [ref. 25356], Randall 1995:116 [ref. 22896], Knapp 1996:21 [ref. 22010], Imamura 1996:203 [ref. 22700], Cheng & Zhou 1997:432 [ref. 26385], Imamura & Ishito 1997:5 [ref. 24379], Lee & Joo 1998:221 [ref. 25739], Fricke 1999:170 [ref. 24106], Nakabo 2000:617 [ref. 25086], Knapp in Randall & Lim 2000:607 [ref. 25122], Sakai et al. 2001:92 [ref. 25693], Wang et al. 2001:298 [ref. 26566], Nakabo 2002:617 [ref. 26001], Choi et al. 2003:257, 569 [ref. 26218], Fricke et al. 2009:42 [ref. 30213] as crocodila, Imamura & Yoshino 2009:310 [ref. 30527] as crocodila, Imamura & Nagao 2011:167 [ref. 31272], Imamura 2011:393 [ref. 31625] as crocodila, Kottelat 2013:317 [ref. 32989], Golani & Fricke 2018:58 [ref. 36273] as crocodila, Suresh et al. 2018:176 [ref. 36495], Eagderi et al. 2019:125 [ref. 37020], Habib & Islam 2020:Supplementary table p. 29 [ref. 38321], Imamura & Aungtonya 2020:28 [ref. 38146] as crocodila, Kim et al. 2020:99 [ref. 39118], Sonoyama et al. 2020:49 [ref. 37637] as crocodila, Thomas et al. 2022:[2] [ref. 39556]).
