Paratypes: MNHN 1929-0118 to 0119 (2); MRAC 152790-93 (4), 152794-99 (6), 152800-02 (3). Species was originally described as Tilapia sp. aff. ogowensis by Thys van den Audenaerde 1966:77 [ref. 9079]; later mentioned as Tilapia nyongana nom. nov. aut sp. (a nomum nudum) in Thys van den Audenaerde 1969:31 [ref. 20865]. The specific name nyongana is treated as an adjective. •Valid as Tilapia nyongana Thys van den Audenaerde 1971 -- (Teugels & Thys van den Audenaerde 1991:493 [ref. 20943], Stiassny et al. 2007:367 [ref. 30045], Dunz & Schliewen 2010:277 [ref. 31064], Dunz & Schliewen 2012:18 [ref. 31983]). •Valid as Coptodon nyongana (Thys van den Audenaerde 1971) -- (Dunz & Schliewen 2013:73 [ref. 32672], Kidé et al. 2016:1387 [ref. 37303], Fermon et al. 2022:245 [ref. 39448]). •Valid as Coptodon nyonganus (Thys van den Audenaerde 1971). Current status: Valid as Coptodon nyonganus (Thys van den Audenaerde 1971). Cichlidae: Pseudocrenilabrinae. Distribution: Western-central Africa: Cameroon south to Gabon. Habitat: freshwater.
