Two species are included in the type series (see Crowley & Ivantsoff 1990:87 [ref. 19216]). •Synonym of Craterocepahlus stercusmuscarum (Günther 1867) -- (Cadwallader & Backhouse 1983:214 [ref. 25473]). •Synonym of Craterocephalus eyresii (Steindachner 1883) -- (Paxton et al. 1989:358 [ref. 12442]). •Valid as Craterocephalus fluviatilis McCulloch 1912 -- (Crowley & Ivantsoff 1990:98 [ref. 19216], Crowley & Ivantsoff 1992:279 [ref. 20015], Ivantsoff & Crowley in McDowall 1996:125 [ref. 22909], Unmack 2001:1061 [ref. 25797], Allen et al. 2002:132 [ref. 25930], Hammer & Walker 2004:88 [ref. 28129], Larson et al. 2005:85 [ref. 28361], Paxton et al. 2006:706 [ref. 28995], Ivantsoff & Allen 2011:54 [ref. 31135], Hammer et al. 2012:64 [ref. 32389], Kuiter 2018:26 [ref. 36369]). Current status: Valid as Craterocephalus fluviatilis McCulloch 1912. Atherinidae: Craterocephalinae. Distribution: Southern Australia: Murray-Darling River system in South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales; now restricted to few lakes associated with Murray River. Habitat: freshwater.

fulvus, Craterocephalus stercusmuscarum Ivantsoff [W.], Crowley [L. E. L. M.] & Allen [G. R.] 1987:172, Fig. 1 [Records of the Western Australian Museum v. 13 (pt 2); ref. 6229] Wirrabilla Lagoon, Collarenebri, New South Wales, Australia, 29°33'S, 148°35'E. Holotype: AMS I.25480-001. Paratypes: AMS IB.784 (1 or ?). The original descriptin llists 41 specimens (20 of which measured and counted). •Synonym of Craterocephalus stercusmuscarum (Günther 1867), but a valid subspecies as described -- (Crowley & Ivantsoff 1992:277 [ref. 20015], Ivantsoff & Crowley in McDowall 1996:131 [ref. 22909], Hammer & Walker 2004:88 [ref. 28129], Ivantsoff & Allen 2011:54 [ref. 31135], Hammer et al. 2012:64 [ref. 32389]). •Valid as Craterocephalus fulvus Ivantsoff, Crowley & Allen 1987 -- (Paxton et al. 2006:707 [ref. 28995], Kuiter 2018:27 [ref. 36369]). Current status: Valid as Craterocephalus fulvus Ivantsoff, Crowley & Allen 1987. Atherinidae: Craterocephalinae. Distribution: Southern Australia: Murray Darling River system of South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. Habitat: freshwater.

No types known. •Synonym of Craterocephalus stercusmuscarum (Günther 1867) -- (Paxton et al. 1989:358 [ref. 12442], Crowley et al. 1991:46 [ref. 16645], Paxton et al. 2006:709 [ref. 28995]). Current status: Synonym of Craterocephalus stercusmuscarum (Günther 1867). Atherinidae: Craterocephalinae. Habitat: freshwater.

Originally as stercus muscarum. •Valid as Craterocephalus stercusmuscarum (Günther 1867) -- (Cadwallader & Backhouse 1983:92 [ref. 25473], Paxton et al. 1989:358 [ref. 12442], Larson & Martin 1990:35 [ref. 16606], Crowley et al. 1991:46 [ref. 16645], Crowley & Ivantsoff 1992:278 [ref. 20015], Crowley et al. 1995:328 [ref. 22579], Pusey et al. 2000:72 [ref. 24466], Unmack 2001:1061 [ref. 25797], Hutchins 2001:25 [ref. 25847], Allen et al. 2002:138 [ref. 25930], Hammer & Walker 2004:87 [ref. 28129], Paxton et al. 2006:709 [ref. 28995], Ivantsoff & Allen 2011:54 [ref. 31135] with subspecies, Hammer et al. 2012:64 [ref. 32389] with subspecies, Larson et al. 2013:63 [ref. 32988], Pusey et al. 2017:33 [ref. 35250]).
