Current status: Valid as Astronotus Swainson 1839. Cichlidae: Cichlinae.

Swainson 1839:229 [ref. 4303] fixed the type as verres Bloch; if accepted would upset current usage. Bonaparte 1841:puntata 156, fasc. 30 [ref. 512] designated pavo (not an included species = lapina) which is usually cited as the type. Based on"Les Crénilabres" of Cuvier 1816:262 [ref. 993]; also 1814:89 [ref. 4884].
