Brachirus (subgenus of Pterois) Swainson [W.] 1838:71, 264 [The natural history and classification of fishes, amphibians, & reptiles, or monocardian animals. v. 1; ref. 4302] Masc. Pterois zebra Cuvier 1829. Type by subsequent designation. Type designated by Swain 1882:277 [ref. 5966] (for Brachyrus); Brachirus Swainson 1838 regarded as an inadvertent spelling error for Brachyrus Swainson 1838: 264 [ref. 4302] by Eschmeyer & Randall 1975:275 [ref. 6389]; name changed to Dendrochirus on p. 180. See account of Dendrochirus. Kottelat 1998:120 [ref. 23436] points out that Jordan 1919:201 [ref. 2410] serves as first revisor, selecting Brachyrus over Brachirus in Scorpaenidae, and Kottelat uses Brachirus Swainson 1839 as the available genus of soles. See also Desoutter et al. 2001:325 [ref. 25559]. •In the synonymy of Dendrochirus Swainson 1839 -- (Mandrytsa 2001:253 [ref. 25636]). Current status: Synonym of Dendrochirus Swainson 1839. Scorpaenidae: Pteroinae.

Brachirus (subgenus of Solea) Swainson [W.] 1839:187, 303 [The natural history and classification v. 2; ref. 4303] Masc. Pleuronectes orientalis Bloch & Schneider 1801. Type by subsequent designation. Type designated by Swain 1882:281 [ref. 5966]. Not Brachirus or Brachyrus Swainson 1838:71, 264 (= Dendrochirus Swainson 1839). Once regarded as preoccupied by Brachirus Swainson 1838, replaced by Synaptura Cantor 1849; but see Kottelat 1998:120 [ref. 23436]. •In the synonymy of Synaptura Cantor 1849 -- (Desoutter 1986:431 [ref. 6212]). •Valid as Brachirus Swainson 1839 -- (Li & Wang 1995:304 [ref. 16193], Kottelat 1998:120 [ref. 23436], Munroe 2001:3880 [ref. 26314], Ataur Rahman 2003:41[ref. 31338], Hoese & Bray 2006:1844 [ref. 29000], Gomon 2008:818 [ref. 30616], Coad 2010:268 [ref. 36620], Kottelat 2013:464 [ref. 32989], Fricke et al. 2018:372 [ref. 35805], Voronina 2019:418 [ref. 36809], Fricke et al. 2019:317 [ref. 36673]). Brachyrus (subgenus of Pterois) Swainson [W.] 1839:264 [The natural history and classification v. 2; ref. 4303] Masc. See Dendrochirus Swainson 1839 and Brachirus Swainson 1838. •Synonym of Dendrochirus Swainson 1839 -- (Mandrytsa 2001:253 [ref. 25636]). Scorpaenidae: Pteroinae.

Dendrochirus (subgenus of Pterois) Swainson [W.] 1839:180 [The natural history and classification v. 2; ref. 4303] Masc. Pterois zebra Cuvier 1829. Type by subsequent designation. As Dendrochirus on p. 180; in volume 1 [1838] as Brachirus (p. 71) and Brachyrus (p. 264). Bleeker 1876:42 serves as first reviser selecting Dendrochirus (see Eschmeyer & Randall 1975:275 [ref. 6389]). Type designated by Swain 1882 for Brachyrus. •Tentatively a synonym of Pterois Oken 1817 -- (Kochzius et al. 2003:400 [ref. 27290] on molecular data). •Valid as Dendrochirus Swainson 1839 -- (Amaoka in Masuda et al. 1984:316 [ref. 6441], Eschmeyer 1986:465 [ref. 5652], Paxton et al. 1989:440 [ref. 12442], Poss 1999:2299 [ref. 24796], Mandrytsa 2001:253 [ref. 25636], Allen et al. 2006:878 [ref. 29002], Freshwater et al. 2009:39 [ref. 30268], Motomura 2009:64 [ref. 30463], Matsunuma & Motomura 2013:1 [ref. 32776], Motomura & Struthers 2015:1091 [ref. 34285], Fricke et al. 2018:130 [ref. 35805], Golani & Fricke 2018:52 [ref. 36273], Fricke et al. 2019:100 [ref. 36673], Matsunuma & Motomura 2019:[1] [ref. 36536]).
