Based on Schlegel Faun. Jap. Pisces, Pl. 73, fig. 3 (= Temminck & Schlegel 1845:Pl. 73 (fig. 3) [ref. 4373]). Because van der Hoeven based his name only on a single, illustrated specimen (from Simabara Bay), the species has one type specimen. There cannot be 5 syntypes of Dictyosoma burgeri as indicated by Yatsu et al. 1978:43-44 [ref. 8858]. Syntypes: RMNH 1948 (5); plus figured specimen that was destroyed.
