Based on Chinese specimens of Engraulis japonica of Günther 1868:390 [ref. 1990]. Lectotype designated by Hata & Motomura 2018:[2] [ref. 35807]. •Valid as Stolephorus chinensis (Günther 1880) -- (Whitehead et al. 1988:408 [ref. 5725], Wongratana et al. 1999:1732 [ref. 24719], Munroe & Nizinski in Randall & Lim 2000:588 [ref. 25122], Zhang 2001:130 [ref. 26586], Kimura in Kimura et al. 2015:15 [ref. 34319], Hata & Motomura 2018:[2] [ref. 35807], Hata et al. 2019:26 [ref. 36766]). Current status: Valid as Stolephorus chinensis (Günther 1880). Engraulidae: Engraulinae. Distribution: Western Pacific: southern China endemic. Habitat: marine.
