Neotype established by Whitehead 1967:589 [ref. 22241]; original locality Cape Verde Is. probably in error. •Valid as Ethmalosa fimbriata (Bowdich 1825) -- (Whitehead 1967 [ref. 22241], Poll et al. 1984:42 [ref. 6172], Whitehead 1985:219 [ref. 5141], Whitehead 1990:210 [ref. 14039], Gourene & Teugels in Lévêque et al. 1990:103 [ref. 21589], Afonso et al. 1999:82 [ref. 25466], Teugels 2007:193 [ref. 30016], Wirtz et al. 2007:6, 26 [ref. 30263], Munroe 2016:1731 [ref. 34560], Parenti 2019:7 [ref. 36934], Fermon et al. 2022:128 [ref. 39448]). Current status: Valid as Ethmalosa fimbriata (Bowdich 1825). Dorosomatidae. Distribution: Eastern Atlantic: Western Sahara south to Angola. Habitat: freshwater, brackish, marine.

forsteri, Harengula Valenciennes [A.] in Cuvier & Valenciennes 1847:299 [Histoire naturelle des poissons v. 20; ref. 1012] San Tiago, Cape Verde Islands. No types known. Type catalog: Whitehead & Bauchot 1986:42-43 [ref. 9739]. Description based on drawing in BMNH labelled Clupea fimbriata, claimed to be by George Forster, but no such drawing found by Whitehead, 1978; more likely based on a tracing by Sarah Bowdich of her own drawing. •Synonym of Ethmalosa fimbriata (Bowdich 1825) -- (Poll et al. 1984:42 [ref. 6172], Whitehead 1985:219 [ref. 5141], Whitehead 1990:210 [ref. 14039]). Current status: Synonym of Ethmalosa fimbriata (Bowdich 1825). Dorosomatidae. Habitat: freshwater, brackish, marine.

setosa, Clupea Steindachner [F.] 1869:149 [Anzeiger der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften, Wien, Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Classe v. 6 (no. 19) (for 15 July 1869); ref. 20467] Liberia or Gabon [not Mexico]. Holotype (unique): NMW 76999. Species later illustrated and described in more detail in Steindachner 1870:311 [p. 22 of separate], Pl. 6, [ref. 4217]. Whitehead 1970:17 [ref. 11605] and 1990:210 [ref. 14039] states that NMW 4173 includes the lectotype and paralectotype, but labels to that lot are dated 1878 thus specimens are apparently from a later collection. •Synonym of Ethmalosa fimbriata (Bowdich 1825) -- (Poll et al. 1984:43 [ref. 6172], Whitehead 1985:219 [ref. 5141], Whitehead 1990:210 [ref. 14039], Gourene & Teugels in Lévêque et al. 1990:103 [ref. 21589]).
