Type by subsequent designation. Type designated by Desmarest 1856:223 [ref. 17401] -- see Whitley 1939:223 [ref. 25866] but Whitley has wrong date for Desmarest. Bloch's species suratensis needlessly renamed meleagris by Cuvier. •Valid as Etroplus Cuvier 1830 -- (Jayaram 1981:337 [ref. 6497], Menon et al. 1993 [ref. 20877], Kullander 1998:494 [ref. 23855], Stiassny et al. 2001:31 [ref. 25402], Carpenter 2001:3334 [ref. 26131], Sparks 2008:5 [ref. 29766], Kottelat 2013:374 [ref. 32989]). Microgaster (subgenus of Glyphisodon) Swainson [W.] 1839:171, 216 [The natural history and classification v. 2; ref. 4303] Fem. Microgaster maculata Swainson 1839 (= Etroplus coruchi Cuvier 1830). Type by monotypy. One included species as, "maculata. Cuv. pl. 136." Swainson's maculata is an unneeded substitute for coruchi Cuvier 1830. Also a junior homonym of Microgaster Latreille 1804 in Hymenoptera. •Synonym of Pseudetroplus Bleeker 1862 -- (Pethiyagoda et al. 2014:585 [ref. 33411]). Current status: Synonym of Pseudetroplus Bleeker 1862. Cichlidae: Etroplinae.
