Lectotype: CAS-SU 9672. Non-type: USNM 51735 (1) Samoa. Distribution: Red Sea; Indo-West Pacific: South Africa, East Africa, Comoros, Mozambique Channel, Mascarenes, Maldives and Chagos Archipelago east to Philippines and Society Islands (French Polynesia), north to Amami Islands (southern Japan), south to Western Australia, Queensland (Australia), New Caledonia, Tonga and Rapa (French Polynesia). Habitat: brackish, marine.

zuluensis, Apogonichthys Fowler [H. W.] 1934:424, Fig. 10 [Annals of the Natal Museum v. 7 (pt 3); ref. 16422] St. Lucia Lake, 20 miles up, Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Holotype: ANSP 53447. Type catalog: Böhlke 1984:21 [ref. 13621]. •Mention -- (Dor 1984:116 [ref. 29757]). •Synonym of Foa brachygramma (Jenkins 1903) -- (Gon 1986:5556 [ref. 5657]). •Putative synonym of Foa madagascariensis Petit 1931 -- (Kuiter & Kozawa 2019:11 [ref. 36965]). •Valid as Foa zuluensis (Fowler 1934) -- (Fraser & Randall 2011:2 [ref. 31459], Fricke et al. 2018:167 [ref. 35805]). •Synonym of Foa fo Jordan & Seale 1905 -- (Fraser 2020:27 [ref. 37581]). Current status: Synonym of Foa fo Jordan & Seale 1905. Apogonidae: Apogoninae. Habitat: freshwater, brackish, marine.
