Proposed as a genus "or perhaps the sub-genus of Fundulus", with two species (X. stellifera Jordan MS and catenata Storer); description in footnote (p. 142) regarded as applying to genus and not to species F. stelliferus. Species stellifera dates to Jordan 1877:322 [ref. 2373]. "Typified by" not precise enough; type by monotypy since catenata was the only available species that was included. •Synonym of Fundulus Lacepède 1803, but a valid subgenus Xenisma -- (Cashner et al. 1988 [ref. 6681], Wildekamp 1996:224 [ref. 23649], Lazara 2001:140 [ref. 25711], Ghedotti et al. 2004:53 [ref. 27500]). •Synonym of Fundulus Lacepède 1803 -- (Parenti 1981:494 [ref. 7066], Ghedotti & Davis 2013:8 [ref. 32490]). Zygonectes Agassiz [L.] 1854:353 [American Journal of Science and Arts (Series 2) v. 17; ref. 69] Masc. Poecilia olivacea Storer 1845. Type by subsequent designation. Appeared first in Agassiz 1853:135 [ref. 67] without adequate description and no included species, described more fully in 1854.
