Objectively invalid; preoccupied by Pterodiscus Pilsbry 1893 in Mollusca; not replaced -- (see Myers 1940:35 [ref. 3118]). •In the synonymy of Gasteropelecus Scopoli 1777 -- (Weitzman & Palmer in Reis et al. 2003:102 [ref. 27061]). 1°Homonym. Scopelus Cuvier [G.] 1816:169 [Le Règne Animal; ref. 993] Masc. Gasteropelecus humboldti Risso 1810. Type by subsequent designation. Possibly based on a misidentified type species. Type evidently first designated by Goode & Bean 1896:70 [ref. 1848] as humboldti of Risso = Myctophum punctatus Rafinesque 1810. Whitley 1953 [ref. 4718] says type is M. humboldti of Waite 1911 but not of Risso. •Synonym of Myctophum Rafinesque 1810 -- (Krefft & Bekker 1973:171 [ref. 7181], Paxton 1979:15 [ref. 6440], Castellanos-Galindo et al. 2006:260 [ref. 28944]). Serpe Cloquet [H.] 1829:373 [Dictionnaire classique d'histoire naturelle [Nouvelle Edition] v. 15; ref. 853] Masc. Serpa crocodilus of Cloquet 1827 (= Gasteropelecus crocodilus Risso 1810). Type by subsequent designation. Genus credited to Whitley 1933 by authors. Not available from Cloquet; regarded as a vernacular name only. Name subsequently latinized as Serpa by Whitley 1933:64 [ref. 4677]. Type established by Whitley 1933:64 [ref. 4677]. •Synonym of Lampanyctus Bonaparte 1840, with authorship of Serpa credited to Whitley 1933 -- (Krefft & Bekker 1973:186 [ref. 7181], Paxton 1979:13 [ref. 6440], Castellanos-Galindo et al. 2006:260 [ref. 28944]). Trichodon Tilesius [W. G. von] (ex Steller) 1813:468 [Mémoires de l'Académie Impériale des Sciences de Saint Pétersbourg v. 4 (for 1811); ref. 13413] Masc. Trachinus trichodon Tilesius 1813. Type by subsequent monotypy. Appeared as a name first published in synonymy of Trachinus; made available back to this date by later use as a valid taxon. Appeared under heading "Trachinus gasteropelecus vel Trichodon Stelleri" on p. 466; species as Drachinus trichodon on p. 406, and as Trachinus trichodon on Pl. 15. First subsequent valid use and technical addition of species probably by Cuvier 1829:149 [ref. 995]. Steller extensively quoted; authorship perhaps could be Steller.
