Originally named Doidyxodon on Pl. 5 (Atlas, 1846) to which genus and species date as above; name spelled Doydixodon in accompanying text which was not published until 1855:323 [ref. 4504]. Doydixodon used by authors (e.g., Kner & Steindachner 1867:358 [ref. 2640], Pequeño & Sáez 2008:101 [ref. 30076]). Type by monotypy. Single included species as "Girella (Girellichthys) zebra (Rich.?) Steindachner." Neotephraeops Castelnau 1872 is an objective synonym; apparently Girellichthys appeared slightly earlier in 1872. •Synonym of Girella Gray 1835. Current status: Synonym of Girella Gray 1835. Apparently based on a misidentified type species, not Glyphidodon nigroris Cuvier in Cuvier & Valenciennes, but is the species later named Melambaphes guentheri Gill 1863. Correct spelling for genus of type species is Glyphisodon. •Synonym of Girella Gray 1835. Current status: Synonym of Girella Gray 1835. Girellidae.

Melanychthys Temminck [C. J.] & Schlegel [H.] 1844:75 [Fauna Japonica Parts 5-6; ref. 4372] Masc. Crenidens melanichthys Richardson 1846. Original description without species. Richardson 1846:243 [ref. 3742] described Crenidens melanichthys but did not recognize Melanychthys. In a footnote under Melanichthes, Temminck & Schlegel 1850:317 [ref. 4375] list Richardson's species, and this can constitute type by subsequent monotypy. Often spelled Melanichthys, but original was Melanychthys. •Synonym of Girella Gray 1835. Current status: Synonym of Girella Gray 1835. Girellidae.
