lateralis, Philypnus Gill [T. N.] 1860:123 [Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia v. 12; ref. 17623] Cabo San Lucas, Baja California, Mexico. Syntypes: USNM 2435-42 (7 or 8). •Valid as Gobiomorus lateralis (Gill 1860) -- (Hoese in Fischer et al. 1995:1064 [ref. 22829]). •Also as a synonym of Gobiomorus maculatus (Günther 1859) -- (Kullander in Reis et al. 2003:660 [ref. 27061]). •Synonym of Dormitator maculatus (Bloch 1792) -- (Kullander in Reis et al. 2003:659 [ref. 27061], Litz & Koerber 2014:35 [ref. 33622], Parenti 2021:33 [ref. 38603]). •Synonym of Dormitator latifrons (Richardson 1844) -- (R. Fricke, pers. comm., 12/20). 2°Homonym. Current status: Synonym of Dormitator latifrons (Richardson 1844). Eleotridae: Eleotrinae. Habitat: freshwater, brackish, marine.

lembus, Eleotris Günther [A.] 1861:121 [Catalogue of the fishes in the British Museum v. 3; ref. 1964] Western Ecuador. Holotype (unique): BMNH 1860.6.16.131. Non-types: ?BMNH (3, 1 Skeleton), SMNS 761 (1). Type catalog: Fricke 1995:13 [ref. 28100] with SMNS 761 as a syntype, but he correctly treated the name as a replacement for Lembus maculatus, Fricke 2005:36 [ref. 29864]. "The specific name must be altered, if Lembus maculatus and Sciaena maculata, Bl., are referred to the same genus." Described from 4 specimens, but should be regarded as a replacement name for Lembus maculatus Günther 1859 with apparently a unique holotype BMNH 1860.6.16.131. •Synonym of Gobiomorus lateralis (Gill 1860) -- (Kullander in Reis et al. 2003:660 [ref. 27061]). •Objective Synonym of Gobiomorus maculatus (Günther 1859) because Eleotris lembus is a replacement name for Lembus maculatus Günther 1859 -- (Parenti 2021:44 [ref. 38603]). Replacement Name. Current status: Synonym of Gobiomorus maculatus (Günther 1859). Eleotridae: Eleotrinae. Habitat: freshwater, brackish, marine.

maculatus, Lembus Günther [A.] 1859:505 [Catalogue of the fishes in the British Museum v. 1; ref. 1961] Andes of Ecuador [Esmeraldas, Ecuador]. Holotype (unique): BMNH 1860.6.16.131. Syntypes: ?SMNS 761 (1). Type catalog: Fricke 1995:13 [ref. 28100], Fricke 2005:36 [ref. 29864]. Needs research; if the original description was based on one specimen, then the holotype is BMNH 1860.6.16.131. See the account of Eleotris lembus Günther 1861. Fricke regards SMNS 761 as a syntype, but that may be incorrect. •Valid as Phylipnus maculatus (Günther 1859) -- (Ortega & Vari 1986:21 [ref. 9708]). •Valid as Gobiomorus maculatus (Günther 1859) -- (Ovchynnyk 1967:43 [ref. 37559], Bussing 1987:250 [ref. 22927], Espinosa Pérez et al. 1993:73 [ref. 22290], Grove & Lavenberg 1997:550 [ref. 24023], Bussing 1998:422 [ref. 24179], Castro-Aguirre et al. 1999:411 [ref. 24550], Kullander in Reis et al. 2003:660 [ref. 27061], Nelson et al. 2004:169 [ref. 27807], Love et al. 2005:160 [ref. 37547], Miller 2006:393 [ref. 28615], Scharpf 2009:12 [ref. 30400], Minckley & Marsh 2009:278 [ref. 31114], Matamoros et al. 2009:24 [ref. 31241], McCosker & Rosenblatt 2010:194 [ref. 30957], Van Tassell 2011:148 [ref. 31732], Angulo et al. 2013:1007 [ref. 33194], McMahan et al. 2013:453 [ref. 32422], Page et al. 2013:174 [ref. 32708], Barriga Salazar 2014:119 [ref. 35745], Jiménez-Prado et al. 2015:350 [ref. 34894], Galván-Villa et al. 2016:149 [ref. 34871], Walsh & Chakrabarty 2016:515 [ref. 34497], Guimarães-Costa et al. 2017:4 [ref. 35781], Romero-Berny et al. 2018:92 [ref. 35859], González-Murcia et al. 2019:293 [ref. 36544], Angulo et al. 2020:7 [ref. 37425], Love et al. 2021:203 [ref. 39279], Parenti 2021:44 [ref. 38603], Meza-Vargas et al. 2022:4 [ref. 39566], Angulo et al. 2023:34 [ref. 40676], Page et al. 2023:120 [ref. 40505], Siccha-Ramirez et al. 2023:159 [ref. 40816], Valenzuela et al. 2023:95 [ref. 40815], Escobar Camacho et al. 2024:8 [ref. 40892] as Gobiomurus maculatus). Current status: Valid as Gobiomorus maculatus (Günther 1859). Eleotridae: Eleotrinae. Distribution: Eastern Pacific: southern tip of Baja California Sur (Mexico) south to Peru, including Gulf of California (Mexico), Cocos Island (Costa Rica) and Galapagos Islands (Ecuador). Habitat: freshwater, brackish, marine.
