Elops Bonaparte [C. L.] (ex Commerson) 1831:178 [Saggio di una distribuzione metodica degli animali vertebrati; ref. 4978] Masc. Gomphosus tricolor Quoy & Gaimard 1824. Appeared as "Elops, Commers. (Gomphosus, Lacep.)" but not recorded by Bonaparte as "Nob." which was his style for replacement names. Not available. Jordan regarded as of doubtful elegibility and as a substitute for Gomphosus. Current status: Synonym of Gomphosus Lacepède 1801. Labridae.

Type designated by Jordan 1917:61 [ref. 2407]. Also appeared in Sonnini 1803:108 (vol. 8) [ref. 30473]. Subgenus should have been spelled Xyrichtys.
