Coccia Günther [A.] 1864:387 [Catalogue of the fishes in the British Museum v. 5; ref. 1974] Fem. Gonostomus ovatus Cocco 1838. Type by being a replacement name. Unneeded replacement for Ichthyococcus Bonaparte 1840; replaced because Günther felt name was inappropriately formed. Correct spelling for genus of type species is Gonostoma. •Synonym of Ichthyococcus Bonaparte 1840 -- (Witzell 1973:118 [ref. 7172], Mukhacheva 1980 [ref. 8685], Castellanos-Galindo et al. 2006:259 [ref. 28944]). Current status: Synonym of Ichthyococcus Bonaparte 1840. Phosichthyidae.

Gonostoma Rafinesque [C. S.] 1810:64 [Indice d'ittiologia siciliana; ref. 3595] Neut. Gonostoma denudata Rafinesque 1810. Type by monotypy. Species originally spelled denudata, termination should be denudatum to agree with gender of genus. •Valid as Gonostoma Rafinesque 1810 -- (Witzell 1973:114 [ref. 7172], Weitzman 1974:472 [ref. 5174], Badcock in Whitehead et al. 1984:297 [ref. 13675], Ahlstrom et al. 1984:185 [ref. 13643], Fujii in Masuda et al. 1984:45 [ref. 6441], Schaefer et al. 1986:251 [ref. 5709], Paxton et al. 1989:185 [ref. 12442], Gomon et al. 1994:247 [ref. 22532], Harold 1998:715 [ref. 24431], Harold 1999:1899 [ref. 24741], Miya & Nishida 2000:385 [ref. 24454], Harold 2003:884 [ref. 27001], Castellanos-Galindo et al. 2006:259 [ref. 28944], Paxton et al. 2006:421 [ref. 28995], Harold & Gomon 2008:227 [ref. 30629], Lipej & Dulčić 2010:22 [ref. 36649], Mecklenburg et al. 2011:119 [ref. 31212], Bañón et al. 2016:307 [ref. 34397], Fricke et al. 2018:65 [ref. 35805], Fricke et al. 2019:59 [ref. 36673]). Current status: Valid as Gonostoma Rafinesque 1810. Gonostomatidae.

Gonostoma van Hasselt [J. C.] 1823:329 [Algemeene Konst- en Letter-bode voor het Jaar I Deel (no. 21); ref. 5105] Neut. Gonostoma javanicum Hyrtl 1855. Type by monotypy. Proposed in brief description, no species. Objectively invalid; preoccupied by Gonostoma Rafinesque 1810 in fishes; Bleeker 1849 described as Anodontostoma, with his species hasseltii (with "Gonostoma javanicum K. v. H." in synonymy but never described by them). Apparently Hyrtl 1855 was first to technically add a species to Gonostoma van Hasselt. •Questionably in the synonymy of Anodontostoma Bleeker 1849 -- (Whitehead 1985:252 [ref. 5141]), but in any event preoccupied. • In the synonymy of Anodontostoma Bleeker 1849 -- (Kottelat 2013:58 [ref. 32989]). 1°Homonym. Current status: Synonym of Anodontostoma Bleeker 1849. Dorosomatidae.

First subsequent designation of type not researched. Coccia Günther 1864 is an unneeded replacement. •Valid as Ichthyococcus Bonaparte 1840 -- (Witzell 1973:118 [ref. 7172], Weitzman 1974:472 [ref. 5174], Mukhacheva 1980 [ref. 8685], Ahlstrom et al. 1984:185 [ref. 13643], Schaefer et al. 1986:244 [ref. 5709], Paxton et al. 1989:187 [ref. 12442], Harold 1999:1904 [ref. 24741], Harold 2003:887 [ref. 27001], Castellanos-Galindo et al. 2006:259 [ref. 28944], Paxton et al. 2006:430 [ref. 28995], Harold & Gomon 2008:236 [ref. 30629], Lipej & Dulčić 2010:22 [ref. 36649], Parin et al. 2014:146 [ref. 33547], Kenaley & Stewart 2015:438 [ref. 34248], Brown et al. 2019:158 [ref. 36444]).
