similis, Muraena Richardson [J.] 1848:83 [Ichthyology of the voyage of H. M. S. Erebus & Terror v. 2 (2); ref. 3740] Polynesia; Red Sea; Japan. Syntypes: BMNH 1846.2.16.100 (1, stuffed) Japan [ the described syntype]. Type catalog: Böhlke & Smith 2002:148 [ref. 26380]. Böhlke & Randall 2000:242 [ref. 24493] regard BMNH 1846.2.16.100 as the holotype as do Böhlke & Smith 2002:148 [ref. 26380], but the type series consists of all the specimens included by the author (whether directly or by bibliographic reference)... In this case, Forster's ms is cited, and 3 localities are given -- therefore syntypes. BMNH 1846.2.16.100 would make the best lectotype. See Smith & Böhlke 2006:35 [ref. 28678] for remarks on types. See Smith 2012:18 [ref. 32155] for remarks on types. •Synonym of Gymnothorax kidako (Temminck & Schlegel 1846) -- (Böhlke & Randall 2000:242 [ref. 24493], Böhlke & Smith 2002:148 [ref. 26380], Smith 2012:18 [ref. 32155]). Current status: Synonym of Gymnothorax kidako (Temminck & Schlegel 1846). Muraenidae: Muraeninae. Habitat: marine.
