Appeared first as "Les Lobotes" in Cuvier 1829:177 [ref. 995]; Kottelat says this is Latinized. Also appeared in Cuvier 1830:319 [ref. 999]. •Valid as Lobotes Cuvier 1829 -- (Tortonese 1973:389 [ref. 7192], Mochizuki in Masuda et al. 1984:161 [ref. 6441], Roux in Whitehead et al. 1986:854 [ref. 13676], Heemstra 1986:622 [ref. 5660], Ataur Rahman 1989:324 [ref. 24860], Castro-Aguirre et al. 1999:306 [ref. 24550], Carpenter 2003:1505 [ref. 27092], Parin 2003:S10 [ref. 28536], Ataur Rahman 2003:350 [ref. 31338], Hilton & Bemis 2005:665 [ref. 28319], Allen et al. 2006:1211 [ref. 29090], Kottelat 2013:344 [ref. 32989], Parin et al. 2014:366 [ref. 33547], Motomura et al. 2017:139 [ref. 35490], Fricke et al. 2018:203 [ref. 35805], Golani & Fricke 2018:89 [ref. 36273], Gill & Leis 2019:22 [ref. 36999]). Paracanthistius Bleeker [P.] 1874:3, 13 [Verhandelingen der Koninklijke Akademie van Wetenschappen, Afdeeling Natuurkunde (Amsterdam) v. 14 (art. 2); ref. 5110] Masc. Holocentrus leopardus Lacepède 1802. Type by original designation. Also appeared in Bleeker 1875:25 and on legend p. 124 (1876) but not on accompanying plate 296 published in 1872 [ref. 4861]. •Synonym of Plectropomus Oken 1817 -- (Randall & Hoese 1986:5 [ref. 6009], Randall & Heemstra 1991:290 [ref. 19601], Parenti & Randall 2020:91 [ref. 37354]). Platysome Liénard [E.] 1832:112, 214 [Proceedings of the Committee of Science and Correspondence of the Zoological Society of London 1832 (pt 2); ref. 12516] Neut. Dules caudavittatus Cuvier 1829 (= Holocentrus caudavittatus Lacepède 1802). Type by monotypy. Appeared as "..., [species] as the type of a new genus...Platysome: it is evidently the Dules caudavittatus, ..." If regarded as available, then Platysoma Scudder 1882:268 [ref. 6462] is an unjustified emendation (and preoccupied); predates Kuhlia Gill 1861 but can be regarded as a nomen oblitum. An alternate view is that the type was not definitely referred and the description inadequate. The genus, if available, has not been used as a valid genus since its proposal, and it can be rejected on that basis. Platysoma and/or Platysome treated in the synonymy of Kuhlia Gill 1861 -- (Maugé 1986:306 [ref. 6218], Randall & Randall 2001:229 [ref. 25399]). Kottelat 2013:371 declared Platterome and Platysoma as nomen oblitum. Current status: Synonym of Kuhlia Gill 1861. Kuhliidae.

Plectropoma Fleming [J.] 1822:393 [The philosophy of zoology v. 2; ref. 5063] Masc. Holocentrus calcarifer Bloch 1790. Type by original designation (also monotypic). Regarded by earlier authors as a mispelling of Plectropomus Oken 1817, but if the type species Holocentrus calcarifer of Fleming 1822 is the same as Holocentrus calcarifer Bloch 1790, then the name is an unused senior synonym of Lates Cuvier 1828. •Synonym of Lates Cuvier 1828. Nomen Oblitum. Current status: Synonym of Lates Cuvier 1828. Latidae.

Plectrypops Gill [T. N.] 1862:237 [Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia v. 14; ref. 1664] Masc. Holocentrum retrospinis Guichenot 1853. Type by monotypy. Correct spelling for genus of type species is Holocentrus. •Valid as Plectrypops Gill 1862 -- (Woods & Sonoda 1973:382 [ref. 6899], Shimizu in Masuda et al. 1984:114 [ref. 6441], Randall & Heemstra 1986:426 [ref. 5707], Paxton et al. 1989:379 [ref. 12442], Chen et al. 1990:259 [ref. 16678], Kotlyar 1996:90 [ref. 23292], Kotlyar 1998:210 [ref. 24674], Randall & Greenfield 1999:2226 [ref. 24790], Greenfield 2003:1195 [ref. 27041], Allen et al. 2006:781 [ref. 29066], Dornburg et al. 2012:733 [ref. 32550], Greenfield et al. 2017:2 [ref. 35170], Fricke et al. 2018:115 [ref. 35805]). Ptertopomus and Plectopomus are regarded as incorrect subsequent spellings of Plectropomus -- see Pethiyagoda & Gill 2012:11 [ref. 31984]. •In the synonymy of Plectropomus Oken 1817 -- (Parenti & Randall 2020:91 [ref. 37354]). Current status: Synonym of Plectropomus Oken 1817. Epinephelidae.
