Holotype (unique): BMNH 1885.10.15.1 [from Wellington Mus.]. Apparently appeared first as above, then in Hector 1875:245, Pl. 11 (fig. 18a) [ref. 18269]. •Valid as Hoplostethus intermedius (Hector 1875) -- (Paxton et al. 1989:366 [ref. 12442], Gomon et al. 1994:404 [ref. 22532], Hutchins 2001:25 [ref. 25847], Paxton et al. 2006:769 [ref. 29074], Gomon 2008:424 [ref. 30616], Moore & Dodd 2010:138 [ref. 30876]). •Synonym of Hoplostethus mediterraneus Cuvier 1829, but a valid subspecies -- (Kotlyar 1986:112 [ref. 6004], Kotlyar 1996:134, 138 [ref. 23292]). •Synonym of Hoplostethus mediterraneus Cuvier 1829 -- (Roberts & Gomon 2012:341 [ref. 32372]). Current status: Synonym of Hoplostethus mediterraneus Cuvier 1829. Trachichthyidae. Distribution: Australia and New Zealand [may be the same as the Atlantic mediterraneus]. Habitat: marine.
