Cynodon Cuvier [G.] 1829:312 [Le Règne Animal (Edition 2) v. 2; ref. 995] Masc. Hydrocynus scomberoides Cuvier 1816. Type by monotypy. Ken Lazara (pers. comm.) pointed out that this genus dates to Cuvier 1829. In the 1990 edition we treated Cynodon as a name first published in synonymy of Rhaphiodon Agassiz 1829:76 [ref. 13], but later made available back to Agassiz with type as gibbus designated by Eigenmann 1910:444 [ref. 1224]. It is now regarded as first published in Cuvier as a name in synonymy, subsequently made available back to Cuvier 1829 by subsequent use as a valid name. Treated as valid but with different type species and concept (e.g., Géry 1986:63 [ref. 6019]); technically, Cynodon Cuvier is the senior objective synonym of Hydrolycus Müller & Troschel 1844. Case 3041 [ref. 24268] before the ICZN was settled in Opinion 2012 [ref. 31354] -- Cynodon Cuvier 1829 was suppressed both for the principle of priority and homonymy. •Synonym of Cynodon Spix 1829. Suppressed. Current status: Synonym of Cynodon Spix 1829. Cynodontidae.

Hydrocionichthys Travassos [H.] 1952:142 [Dusenia; ref. 4450] Masc. Hydrocynus forskahlii Cuvier 1819. Type by original designation (also monotypic). See account of Hydrocynus. Travassos regarded Eigenman 1810 as establishing the type of Hydrocyon as H. lucius, so Travassos described a new genus for H. forskahlii Cuvier 1819. •Synonym of Hydrocynus Cuvier 1816 -- (Paugy 1984:169 [ref. 6183]) but with type for both genera as forskahlii. Current status: Synonym of Hydrocynus Cuvier 1816. Alestidae.

Hydrocynus (subgenus of Salmo) Cuvier [G.] 1816:167 [Le Règne Animal; ref. 993] Masc. Hydrocynus lucius Cuvier 1816. Type by subsequent designation. Needs research on type species and possible action by the ICZN. Type often given as Hydrocyon forskahlii Cuvier 1819, but that was not an originally included species in 1816. Type apparently designated first by Eigenmann 1910:446 [ref. 1224] as lucius (see Travassos 1951 [ref. 4450]), and not by Agassiz in Spix & Agassiz 1829:76 [ref. 13] or by Cuvier 1819 [ref. 1017]. Hydrocion Duméril 1856 and Hydrocinus Boulenger (ex Cuvier) 1909 are unjustified emendations or incorrect subsequent spellings. Type apparently not H. forskahlii Cuvier 1819. Hydrocionichthys Travassos 1952 is an objective synonym if the type of Hydrocynus is forskahlii. But the type species, if correctly H. lucius, is a South American species placed by current authors in the genus Boulengerella in a different family. An African type species for Hydrocynus, such as forskahlii, would stabilize current usage.
