Type catalog: Blanc & Hureau 1972:692 [ref. 21541]. Appeared first in Cuvier 1829:232 [ref. 995] without a precise tie to previous literature, as "M. Ferrandi, ib." with "ib." referring to Voyage de Freycinet [Quoy & Gaimard]. Appeared in 1836 with description based on Quoy & Gaimard's Mugil Ferrandi, Pl. 59 (fig. 3); Quoy & Gaimard (1825:338 [ref. 3574]) used the vernacular "Ferrand" and named the species Mugil argenteus.
