Cerichthys Agassiz [L.] 1846:74 [Nomenclatoris Zoologici Index Universalis; ref. 64] Masc. Ceritius [sic] macrourus Rafinesque 1810. An unjustified emendation of Cerictius Rafinesque 1810, which Jordan 1917:78 [ref. 2407] considered an imaginary taxon. •Synonym of Cerictius Rafinesque 1810. Current status: Unknown.

Hyomacrurus (subgenus of Coryphaenoides) Gilbert [C. H.] & Hubbs [C. L.] 1920:422 [Bulletin of the United States National Museum No. 100, v. 1 (pt 7); ref. 1638] Masc. Macrourus hyostomus Smith & Radcliffe 1912. Type by original designation (also monotypic). Appeared as Hyostomus Gilbert & Hubbs MS in Jordan (Aug.) 1920:570 [ref. 4905] by error; name changed in proof sheets to Hyomacrurus and published in Gilbert & Hubbs 1920 as above. •Valid as Hyomacrurus Gilbert & Hubbs 1920 -- (Marshall 1973:564 [ref. 6965], Fahay & Markle 1984:274 [ref. 13653]). •Probably valid -- (see Iwamoto & Sazonov 1988:39 [ref. 6228]). •Synonym of Mataeocephalus Berg 1898 -- (Sazanov et al. 2003:293 [ref. 27176], Castellanos-Galindo et al. 2006:205 [ref. 28944]). Misidentified type species, not rupestris Gunnerus; case probably should be referred to the ICZN. Jordan 1917:44 [ref. 2407] regards Macrourus berglax Lacepède 1801 as type, to which Fabricius' and Bloch's misidentifications are assigned.
