Lectotype: whereabouts unknown. Description independent of Chaetodon strigangulus Cuvier 1831. Lectotype selected by Fricke 1999:336 [ref. 24106] as the fish shown in the original illustration (Pl. 17, fig. 2) thereby restricting the type locality to Tahiti, Society Islands. Objectively invalid; preoccupied by Chaetodon strigangulus Cuvier 1831. •Synonym of Megaprotodon trifascialis (Quoy & Gaimard 1825) based on placement of C. strigangulus Cuvier. •Synonym of Chaetodon trifascialis Quoy & Gaimard 1825 -- (Fricke 1999:336 [ref. 24106], Randall 2005:321 [ref. 28239]). 1°Homonym.
