Apparently predates Merluccius Rafinesque 1810:25 [ref. 3594]; Merluccius cited on 1810:12 in parentheses. On p. 67 Rafinesque says, "In vece di Onus, sp. 30. leggete Merlangus"; so Merlangus is a replacement for Onus. •Synonym of Merluccius Rafinesque 1810 -- (Svetovidov 1973:300 [ref. 7169], Lloris & Rucabado 1991:61 [ref. 22530], Lloris et al. 2003:17 [ref. 27698], Castellanos-Galindo et al. 2006:205 [ref. 28944]). Polydatus Gistel [J.] 1848:105 [Naturgeschichte des Thierreichs; ref. 1822] Masc. Polydatus lucius Gistel 1848 (= Gadus merluccius Linnaeus 1758). Type by monotypy. Described as "(G. [Gadus] Merlucius ober Polydatus Lucius, Nobis)" and apparently can be regarded as an available generic name, with lucius an unneeded species substitute for merluccius. •Synonym of Merluccius Rafinesque 1810 -- (Castellanos-Galindo et al. 2006:205 [ref. 28945]).
