Gill (1862:139) described M. brachistius and included with it anguilloides, tuckeri and zambanenje, but in key on same page (in error) associated cyprinoides with Marcusenius as the implied type, with anguilloides in Mormyrops. Gill 1863:44 designated anguilloides as type. Mormyrus longipinnis Rüppell 1832. Type by monotypy. Dates to Swainson 1838:309 with one species mentioned (Scrophicephalus longipinnis of Swainson [= Mormyrus longipinnis Rüppell 1832]). Also in Swainson 1839:187 [ref. 4303] without species and as a subgenus of Mormyrus; also as a subgenus in 1838:309 based on text. •Synonym of Mormyrus Linnaeus 1758 -- (Taverne 1972:163 [ref. 6367]). Current status: Synonym of Mormyrus Linnaeus 1758. Mormyridae.
