Mugiloides Lacepède [B. G. E.] 1803:393 [Histoire naturelle des poissons (Lacepède) v. 5; ref. 4930] Masc. Mugil chilensis Molina 1782. Type by monotypy. This genus is evidently based on a mullet (family Mugilidae) according to Rosa & Rosa 1987 [ref. 6066], but the description by Molina evidently was inaccurate with regard to the lack of the first dorsal fin. This means that the family name Mugiloididae (or Mugiloidae) based in Mugiloides no longer is used for the fishes known as sandperches; the oldest family name available for them is the Pinguipedidae. The type species is regarded as unidentifiable, and the genus is thereby unidentifiable. See account of Mugil chilensis. Current status: Unknown. Mugilidae.

Myxonum Rafinesque [C. S.] 1815:88 [Analyse de la nature; ref. 3584] Neut. Mugil chilensis Molina 1782. Type by being a replacement name. As "Myxonum R. [Rafinesque] Mugiloides Lac." •An available replacement name (unneeded) for and objective synonym of Mugiloides Lacepède 1803, and this genus unidentifiable -- (see Rosa & Rosa 1987:1049 [ref. 6066]). Current status: Synonym of Mugil. Mugilidae.
