Objectively invalid; preoccupied by Myctophum (Lampanyctus) braueri Lönnberg 1905. •Synonym of Hygophum reinhardtii (Lütken 1892) -- (Krefft & Bekker 1973:184 [ref. 7181], Paxton 1979:12 [ref. 6440], Hulley 1990:429 [ref. 15273], Mundy 2005:222 [ref. 28379]). 1°Homonym. Holotype (unique): NRM 11105 [SYD/1902265.4105]. Also appeared as new in Lönnberg 1905:64 [ref. 2839]. •Valid as Gymnoscopelus braueri (Lönnberg 1905) -- (Hulley 1986:299 [ref. 5672], Pequeño 1989:37 [ref. 14125] as brauersi, Hulley 1990:154 [ref. 21685], Miller 1993:534 [ref. 21297], Olaso et al. 1997:83 [ref. 25009], Duhamel et al. 2005:186 [ref. 32059], Balushkin & Prirodina 2020:37 [ref. 37828], Sutton et al. 2020:189 [ref. 37832] in subgenus Gymnoscopelus).
