L.] 1946:137, Fig. 1 [Stanford Ichthyological Bulletin v. 3 (no. 2); ref. 509] About 200 miles off Cape Cormorin, India [southern Laccadive Sea, Indian Ocean], 5°56'N, 76°22'E. Holotype (unique): ZSI F7405/2 [possibly lost]. Type catalog: Menon & Rama Rao 1971:343 [ref. 31198]. •Questionably valid as Myctophum lychnobium Bolin 1946 -- (Paxton 1979:16 [ref. 6440]). •Possible synonym of Myctophum spinosum (Steindachner 1867) -- (Paxton & Hulley in Randall & Lim 2000:594 [ref. 25122]). •Valid as Myctophum lychnobium Bolin 1946 -- (Shinohara et al. 1994:67 [ref. 22800], Chen 2002:138 [ref. 26587], Mundy 2005:228 [ref. 28379]). •Valid as Dasyscopelus lychnobius (Bolin 1946) -- (Martin et al. 2018:83 [ref. 35716] as lychnobium). Current status: Valid as Dasyscopelus lychnobius (Bolin 1946). Myctophidae: Myctophinae. Distribution: Indo-Pacific: East Africa east to Hawaiian Islands and Marquesas Islands and eastern equatorial Pacific, north to southern Japan, south to northern Australia, but absent from eastern Pacific continental shelf. Habitat: marine.

Distribution: Southeastern Atlantic: South Africa; Indo-West Pacific: South Africa east to Hawaiian Islands and Marquesas Islands, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to Queensland and Lord Howe Island (Australia) and New Caledonia and New Zealand region; strays to southeastern Atlantic. Habitat: marine.
