Paratypes: [2 uncataloged specimens found in 1997] FAKU 1762 (1), 6075-76 (2). •Synonym of Neocentropogon aeglefinus (Weber 1913), but a valid subspecies as described -- (Nakabo in Masuda et al. 1984:319 [ref. 6441], Chen et al. 1997:171 [ref. 26476], Nakabo 2000:599 [ref. 25086], Shinohara et al. 2001:314 [ref. 25995], Nakabo 2002:599 [ref. 26001], Ogihara & Motomura 2012:139 [ref. 32409]). •Valid as Neocentropogon japonicus Matsubara 1943 -- (Klausewitz 1985:21 [ref. 5806], Poss in Randall & Lim 2000:605 [ref. 25122], Ho et al. 2009:28 [ref. 31217], Quéro et al. 2011:99 [ref. 31629], Fricke et al. 2017:1 [ref. 35210], Chungthanawong & Motomura 2021:[12] [ref. 38168], Luo et al. 2024:9 [ref. 41630]). Current status: Valid as Neocentropogon japonicus Matsubara 1943. Synanceiidae: Tetraroginae. Distribution: Northwestern Pacific: South China Sea and Philippines north to southern Japan. Habitat: marine.
