tropicus, Odontognathus Hildebrand [S. F.] 1946:94, Fig. 19 [Bulletin of the United States National Museum No. 189; ref. 2161] Gulf of Guayaquil, off Puerto Pizarro, Peru. Holotype: USNM 127809. Additional material: USNM 127810 (1), 128345-51 (1, 18, 11, 1, 3, 7, 1). Besides the type, specimens from two localities are referred to the species with doubt and are therefore not considered types. Neoopisthopterus is the correct spelling. •Valid as Neoopisthopterus tropicus (Hildebrand 1946) -- (Whitehead 1985:288 [ref. 5141], Allen & Robertson 1994:61 [ref. 22193], Bussing & López S. 1994:48 [ref. 23101], Whitehead & Rodriguez-Sánchez in Fischer et al. 1995:1413 [ref. 22830], Chirichigno F. & Vélez D. 1998:140 [ref. 24555], Castro-Aguirre et al. 1999:121 [ref. 24550], Nelson et al. 2004:66 [ref. 27807], Love et al. 2005:25 [ref. 37547], McMahan et al. 2013:444 [ref. 32422], Page et al. 2013:66 [ref. 32708], Page et al. 2023:60 [ref. 40505]). Current status: Valid as Neoopisthopterus tropicus (Hildebrand 1946). Pristigasteridae. Distribution: Eastern Pacific: Pacific coast of southern Baja California Sur (Mexico) south to northern Peru, including Gulf of California (Mexico). Habitat: brackish, marine.
