Described first as Salmo saramao by Oshima in Jordan & Oshima 1919 (June), but that name has not been used and is regarded as a forgotten name of Salmo formosanus Jordan & Oshima 1919 (ICZN Opinion 2301, Ho & Gwo 2010:300 [ref. 31205]). The description of formosanus was issued 9 Sept. 1919. •Synonym of Oncorhynchus masou (Brevoort 1856) -- (Berg 1948:202 [ref. 12882] as masu, Dorofeeva & Savvaitova 1998:33 [ref. 23574]). •Valid as Oncorhynchus formosanus (Jordan & Oshima 1919) -- (Ho & Gwo 2010:300 [ref. 31205]). •Synonym of Oncorhynchus masou (Brevoort 1856), but a valid subspecies -- (Yue & Chen 1998:13 [ref. 26415], Gwo et al. 2008:778 [ref. 31607], Ho & Shao 2011:35 [ref. 31432], Zhang et al. 2016:189 [ref. 34477]). Holotype: FMNH 58682 [ex CM 7786]. Type catalog: Henn 1928:52 [ref. 12305], Ibarra & Stewart 1987:62 [ref. 12367]. Paralectotype: (1). Type catalog: Ho & Shao 2011:34 [ref. 31432]. On p. 4 of English translation. A forgotten name is Salmo formosanus Jordan & Oshima 1919. Case 3526 to suppress saramao and conserve the name formosanus is approved in Opinion 2301, 69(2):155-156. Lectotype designation by Ho & Shao 2011:35 [ref. 31432]. •Synonymy of Oncorhynchus masou (Brevoort 1856), subspecies formosanus Jordan & Oshima 1919 -- (Ho & Shao 2011: 35 [ref. 31432]). •Synonym of Oncorhynchus formosanus (Jordan & Oshima 1919) -- (Ho & Gwo 2010:300 [ref. 31205], Ho & Shao 2011:34 [ref. 31432]).
