Current status: Synonym of Opistognathus nigromarginatus Rüppell 1830. Opistognathidae. Habitat: marine.

Genus was spelled Opisthognathus in original. •Valid as Opistognathus cuvierii Valenciennes 1836 -- (Andreata & Séret 1996:588 [ref. 16204] as cuvieri, Smith-Vaniz 1997:1106 [ref. 22985], Moura & Menezes in Menezes et al. 2003:78 [ref. 27192] as cuvieri, Smith-Vaniz et al. 2018:114 [ref. 36264], Carvalho-Filho in Marceniuk et al. 2021:265 [ref. 38945], Carvalho-Filho 2023:217 [ref. 40480] as cuvieri). Current status: Valid as Opistognathus cuvierii Valenciennes 1836. Opistognathidae. Distribution: Southwestern Atlantic: Bahia south to São Paulo (Brazil) endemic. Habitat: marine.
