The holotype is apparently at the BMNH and not ZRC 1444 as given by Burridge 1992:185 [ref. 19452]. •Synonym of Acanthophthalmus kuhlii (Valenciennes 1846) -- (Burridge 1992:181 [ref. 19452]). •Valid as Pangio malayana (Tweedie 1956) -- (Kottelat & Lim 1993:231 [ref. 21437], Doi 1997:15 [ref. 22832], Ng & Tan 1999:357 [ref. 24159], Kottelat & Widjanarti 2005:158 [ref. 28284], Kottelat 2012:39 [ref. 32367], Valis'eva & Vasil'ev 2012:666 [ref. 32477], Kottelat 2013:183 [ref. 32989]).
