Type catalog: Collette & Knapp 1967:68-69 [ref. 20211]. The original spelling whipplii is an acceptable spelling, but based on Art. 33.2.3.1 of the Code, the spelling whipplei can be retained. •Synonym of Etheostoma whipplii (Girard 1859) -- (Robison & Buchanan 1988:444 [ref. 23393] as whipplei). •Synonym of Etheostoma whipplei (Girard 1859), but a valid subspecies montanum with spelling of species as whipplei -- (Lee et al. 1980:709 [ref. 22416], Page 1983:125 [ref. 22189], Stauffer et al. 1995:329 [ref. 23376]). Current status: Synonym of Etheostoma whipplei (Girard 1859). Percidae: Etheostomatinae. Habitat: freshwater.
