Based on two sources: the Gronovius specimen from Suriname is a cichlid, the NHRM specimen is the same as Polycentrus schomburgkii Müller & Troschel 1849 (see Fernholm & Wheeler 1983:252-253 [ref. 20707]); it was designated lectotype by Kullander 1983:84 [ref. 8319]. A petition to the ICZN to suppress Labrus punctatus to conserve Polycentrus schomburgkii was submitted to the ICZN (see Paepke 1993 [ref. 20914]) and Cases 2880 and 2905. Long recognized as valid, but threatened by Labrus puncatatus Linnaeus 1758 as shown by Paepke 1993 [ref. 20914]. Long recognized as valid, but threatened by Labrus puncatatus Linnaeus 1758 as shown by Paepke 1993 [ref. 20914].
