Distribution: Southern Indo-West Pacific: Mozambique, Madagascar underwater ridge, Réunion and Mauritius (western Mascarenes), eastern Australia, New Zealand. Habitat: marine.

nobilis, Polymixia Lowe [R. T.] 1836:198, Pl. 4 [Transactions of the Cambridge Philosophical Society v. 6 (pts 1); ref. 2828] Off Madeira. No types known. Possible syntype and/or Lowe specimen: BMNH 1855.11.29.10. Nemobrama webbii dates to the plate published in 1837, which apparently makes it older than Polymixia nobilis 1838; it is suggested that continued use of nobilis be retained. •Valid as Polymixia nobilis Lowe 1836 -- (Nielsen 1973:336 [ref. 6885], Hureau in Whitehead et al. 1986:738 [ref. 13676], Heemstra 1986:432 [ref. 5660], Edwards & Glass 1987:632 [ref. 9166], Gutherz et al. 1987:143 [ref. 39765], Paxton et al. 1989:362 [ref. 12442], McAllister 1990:112 [ref. 14674], Hureau 1990:625 [ref. 17267], Cervigón 1991:254 [ref. 24472], Kotlyar 1992:18 [ref. 20773], Cervigón 1992:380 [ref. 23827], Kotlyar 1996:65 [ref. 23292], Santos et al. 1997:52 [ref. 23531], Arruda 1997:74 [ref. 24952], McEachran & Fechhelm 1998:694 [ref. 23897], Uiblein et al. 1999:62 [ref. 24045], Smith-Vaniz et al. 1999:153 [ref. 25013], Menezes & Figueiredo in Menezes et al. 2003:58 [ref. 27192], Moore 2003:962 [ref. 27002], Moore et al. 2003:205 [ref. 27076], Moore 2016:1942 [ref. 34570], Almeida & Alves 2017:293 [ref. 35554], Almeida & Alves 2019:271 [ref. 37509], Borden et al. 2019:4 [ref. 36559], Brown et al. 2019:160 [ref. 36444], Carneiro et al. 2019:149 [ref. 37250], Reiner 2019:110 [ref. 38139], Grande & Wilson 2021:584 [ref. 38492], Robertson et al. 2022:87 [ref. 39353], Page et al. 2023:104 [ref. 40505], Caixeta et al. 2024:11 [ref. 40847]). venustus, Dinemus Poey [F.] 1860:161, Pl. 14 (fig. 1) [Memorias sobre la historia natural de la Isla de Cuba v. 2; ref. 3499] Cuba. Syntypes: MCZ 21812 (2). Type catalog: Howell Rivero 1938:181 [ref. 22926]. Lachner 1955:200 [ref. 10032] stated under Polymixia lowei, "Poey's (1880) account of venustus included one of the diagnostic characters [for lowei].... On the basis of his description and one cotype (MCZ 21812, 134 mm. standard length) I place venustus in the synonymy of lowei. The other cotype of venustus (also MCZ 21812) represents nobilis." Lachner did not establish a lectotype and subsequent workers continue to place venustus in the synonymy of both species. Apparently no lectotype has been designated, but the 134-mm specimen in MCZ 21812 should be designated lectotype. •Synonym of Polymixia nobilis Lowe 1836 in part -- (Hureau 1990:625 [ref. 17267], Kotlyar 1996:65 [ref. 23292]). •Synonym of Polymixia lowei Günther 1859 in part -- (Kotlyar 1996:74 [ref. 23292]). Holotype: AMNH 13569. Paratypes: AMNH 20924 (1). •Synonym of Polymixia lowei Günther 1859 -- (Kotlyar 1996:74 [ref. 23292]). Current status: Synonym of Polymixia lowei Günther 1859. Polymixiidae. Habitat: marine.
