Pristigenys Agassiz [L.] 1835:299 [Recherches sur les poissons fossiles; ref. 13390] Fem. Chaetodon substriatus Blainville 1818. Type by monotypy. Apparently available from Agassiz 1835 as new generic name in association with an established fossil species name, now †Pristigenys substriata (Blainville 1818). Recent species are assigned to it as well. Type by subsequent designation. Type designated by Morrison 1890 [ref. 6864]. As Pseudopriacanthus and †Pristigenys are sister taxa, we prefer to unite both genera under the frequently used generic name Pristigenys. •Valid as Pseudopriacanthus Bleeker 1869 -- (Fitch & Crooke 1984 [ref. 4950], Carnevale et al. 2017:554 [ref. 35284]). •Synonym of fossil genus Pristigenys Agassiz 1835 -- (Fritzsche & Johnson 1981 [ref. 5399], Taverne 1988 [ref. 6863], Starnes 1988:131 [ref. 6978], Iwatsuki et al. 2012:41 [ref. 31809]). Current status: Synonym of Pristigenys Agassiz 1835. Priacanthidae.
