Syntypes: (3) BMNH 1853.12.27.5 (1 or 2), ?1866.7.12.18 (1). •Synonym of Puntius dorsalis (Jerdon 1849) -- (Menon 1999:91 [ref. 24904]). •Apparently valid as Puntius layardi (Günther 1868) from Sri Lanka but not seen in the wild since 1868 -- (Pethiyagoda et al. 2008:201 [ref. 29986]). •Valid as Puntius layardi (Günther 1868) -- (Pethiyagoda et al. 2012:73 [ref. 32071], Ren et al. 2020:[5] [ref. 37805] as cf. layardi). puckelli, Puntius (Capoeta) Day [F.] 1868:197 [Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London 1868 (pt 1); ref. 1076] Bangalore, India. Holotype (unique): whereabouts unknown. Day specimens: BMNH 1889.2.1.638 (1), 1889.2.1.4378 (1); ZSI 2728 (1), 7162 (1, lost). Type catalog: Whitehead & Talwar 1976:156 [ref. 23762]. Originally as puckelli but named after "Major Puckle"; the most desirable spelling would have been pucklei, but that change is not a mandatory one. Since the incorrect subsequent spelling pucklei has not attained prevailing usage status, the spelling puckelli should be continued.
