siscowet, Salmo Agassiz [L.] 1850:333, Pl. 1 (fig. 3) [Lake Superior; ref. 66] Michipicotin, on northeastern shore of Lake Superior, North America. Syntypes: MCZ 10031 and 10032 (2, skeletons). See Salmo siskawitz Herbert 1850 and Salmo siskiwit Agassiz 1848. Spelled siskawitz in Herbert 1850:112 [ref. 17299] from Agassiz account and siskiwit in Agassiz 1848:61 [ref. 15806]. Also spelled siskowit in Kennicott 1855:594 [ref. 26682]. Herbert might date to 1849, and thus, predate siscowet of Agassiz, both of which were predated by siskiwit Agassiz 1848. However, siscowet has appeared in literature more commonly and could be conserved as a nomen protectum. In Jordan 1878:430 [ref. 2379] and Jordan 1878:105 [ref. 10445] as siscowet. •Synonym of Salvelinus namaycush (Walbaum 1792), but a valid subspecies -- (Scharpf 2006:34 [ref. 30386]). Also spelled siskowit in Kennicott 1855:594 [ref. 26682]. Herbert might date to 1849, and thus, predate siscowet of Agassiz, both of which were predated by siskiwit Agassiz 1848. toma, Salmo Holmes [E.] (ex Hamlin) 1863:109 [Second Annual Report of Nat. Hist. Geol. State Maine; ref. 26847] Lakes of Maine, U.S.A., and New Brunswick, Canada. No types known. On p. 112 it is stated, "Copied from a brochure on the Tongue, published by A. C. Hamlin, M. D., Bangor." Holmes apparently provided the scientific name; authorship as Homes and Hamlin or Hamlin and Homes is worth consideration. •Synonym of Salvelinus namaycush (Walbaum 1792).
