The subspecies chiliensis occurs from the Gulf of Guayaquil, Peru, south to Talcahuano and Valdivia Chile; subspecies lineolata occurs from Alaska south to tip of Baja California (Mexico) and Revillagigedo Islands (Mexico), and strays to Hawaiian Islands (U.S.A.). Habitat: marine.

Current status: Synonym of Sarda chiliensis (Cuvier 1832). Scombridae: Scombrinae. Distribution: Northeast Pacific [this subspecies]: Alaska (U.S.A.) south to southern tip of Baja California (Mexico), including Revillagigedo Islands (Mexico); straying to Hawaiian Islands (U.S.A.). Habitat: marine.
