Perhaps can be considered a replacement name for Harengula melanurus Bleeker 1853, secondarily preoccupied by Clupea melanura Cuvier 1829 (and Alausa melanura Valenciennes 1847), but Günther includes three nominal species with question in synonymy and provides a description; specimens above were ones seen by Günther (if regarded as an original description). •Valid as Sardinella atricauda (Günther 1868) -- (Whitehead 1985:92 [ref. 5141], Munroe et al. 1999:1809 [ref. 24728], Stern et al. 2016:18 [ref. 34733]). Current status: Valid as Sardinella atricauda (Günther 1868). Dorosomatidae. Distribution: Western Pacific. Habitat: marine.

Available from footnote as, "Cl. melanura, N., Lacéd., V, xi, 3, sous le nom de Clupanodon Jussieu, mais la description se rapporte à la fig. xi, 3, nommée variété du clupanodon chinois." Distribution: Indo-West Pacific: East Africa, Persian Gulf, Seychelles, Madagascar and western Mascarenes (La Réunion, Mauritius) east to northern Gilbert Islands (Kiribati), Samoa and Tonga, north to southern Japan, south to Dampier Archipelago (Western Australia), Queensland (Australia) south to 23°03'S and New Caledonia. Habitat: brackish, marine.

Syntypes: (4) BMNH 1867.11.28.31 (1), RMNH 7095 (1 or more of 6). Non-type Bleeker specimens: MNHN 0000-3737 to 3738 (4, 2), A-7660 (1); NMV A937 (1). Type catalog: Bertin 1940:287-288 [ref. 293]. Subjectively invalid; secondarily preoccupied by Clupea melanura Cuvier 1829 when both were in Clupea, replaced by Clupea atricauda Günther 1868 and by Harengula valenciennesi Bleeker 1868. •Synonym of Sardinella atricauda (Günther 1868) -- (Whitehead 1985:92 [ref. 5141], Munroe et al. 1999:1809 [ref. 24728]). 2°Homonym. valenciennesi, Harengula (Paralosa) Bleeker [P.] 1868:300 [Verslagen en Mededeelingen der Koninklijke Akademie van Wetenschappen. Afdeeling Natuurkunde (Ser. 2) v. 2; ref. 423] Waigeo, Indonesia. Available as "Harengula (Paralosa) valenciennesi Blkr = Har. melanurus Blkr." Essentially a replacement name for Harengula melanurus Bleeker 1853, preoccupied by Clupea melanura Cuvier 1829 when both are in Clupea. •Synonym of Sardinella atricauda (Günther 1868) -- (Whitehead 1985:92 [ref. 5141]). Current status: Synonym of Sardinella atricauda (Günther 1868). Dorosomatidae. Habitat: marine.

vanicoris, Harengula Jordan [D. S.] & Seale [A.] 1906:187 [Bulletin of the Bureau of Fisheries v. 25 (for 1905); ref. 2497] Based on Alausa melanura of Cuvier & Valenciennes 1847:441, not Clupea Melanura Cuvier. •Synonym of Sardinella melanura (Cuvier 1829) -- (Whitehead 1985:108 [ref. 5141]).
