Current status: Synonym of Scarus Forsskål 1775. Labridae: Scarinae. Odax Valenciennes [A.] in Cuvier & Valenciennes 1840:299 [Histoire naturelle des poissons v. 14; ref. 4882] Masc. Scarus pullus Forster 1801. Type by subsequent designation. Appeared first in Cuvier 1829:266 [ref. 995] as "Les Odax"; based on style of text and contents, the name was apparently not intended as new but as a new use of Odax Commerson in Lacepède 1801 (not available) but in the vernacular. Probably dates to Valenciennes as above; type species and type designation not researched, usually given as above. •Valid as Odax Valenciennes 1840 -- (Ayling & Paxton 1983 [ref. 5258], Richards & Leis 1984:544 [ref. 13668], Gomon & Paxton 1986:31 [ref. 5656], Gomon et al. 1994:702 [ref. 22532], Bray & Hoese 2006:1421 [ref. 29049], Kuiter 2010:68 [ref. 35285], Gomon et al. 2015:1372 [ref. 34207]). Current status: Valid as Odax Valenciennes 1840. Labridae: Hypsigenyinae. Petronason Swainson [W.] 1839:172, 226 [The natural history and classification v. 2; ref. 4303] Masc. Scarus psittacus of Rüppell (= Scarus psittacus Forsskål 1775). Type by subsequent designation. Type designated by Swain 1883:274 [ref. 5966]. •Synonym of Scarus Forsskål 1775 -- (Bellwood 1994:67 [ref. 19116], Parenti & Randall 2000:54 [ref. 24943], Kottelat 2013:381 [ref. 32989]). Current status: Synonym of Scarus Forsskål 1775. Labridae: Scarinae. Pseudoscarus Bleeker [P.] 1861:230 [Verslagen en Mededeelingen der Koninklijke Akademie van Wetenschappen. Afdeling Natuurkunde. v. 12; ref. 381] Masc. Scarus microrhinos Bleeker 1854. Type by subsequent designation. Type by subsequent designation by Jordan & Evermann 1898:1655 [ref. 2444]. Appeared first in Bleeker 1861:70 [ref. 12601] without diagnosis and one species included as "Pseudoscarus psittacus Blkr.," indicating a subsequent usage of Scarus psittacus Forskål 1775 in a different sense (Scarus psittacus sensu Bleeker), unavailable name, confirmed by Bleeker 1861:240 [ref. 381], so Pseudoscarus was not made available at this occasion. Kottelat 2013:381 intended to act under Art. 70.3.2 and designated Pseudoscarus cantori Bleeker 1861 as the type species actually involved in the misidentification of psittacus by Bleeker 1861:70; this act was invalid because Pseudoscarus was not made available by Bleeker 1861:70 [ref. 12601] (F. Welter-Schultes, pers. comm., July 2025). •Synonym of Chlorurus Swainson 1839 -- (Bellwood 1994:66 [ref. 19116], Parenti & Randall 2000:52 [ref. 24943]). •Synonym of Scarus Forsskål 1775 -- (Kottelat 2013:381 [ref. 32989]). Current status: Synonym of Scarus Forsskål 1775. Labridae: Scarinae. Scarichthys Bleeker [P.] 1859:xvii, 106 [Acta Societatis Regiae Scientiarum Indo-Neêrlandicae v. 6 (art. 3); ref. 371] Masc. Scarus naevius Valenciennes 1840. Type by subsequent designation. Earliest type designation not established, probably by Jordan 1919:287. Also appeared in Bleeker 1859:334 [ref. 368] as name with one described species; type by monotypy if ref. 368 was published before ref. 371. Also in Bleeker 1861:243 [ref. 381]. •Synonym of Leptoscarus Swainson 1839 -- (Bellwood 1994:64 [ref. 19116], Bruce & Randall 1985 [ref. 5234], Parenti & Randall 2000:54 [ref. 24943]). Current status: Synonym of Leptoscarus Swainson 1839. Labridae: Scarinae. Scarops Schultz [L. P.] 1958:17, 18 [Bulletin of the United States National Museum No. 214; ref. 3970] Masc. Scarus rubroviolaceus Bleeker 1847. Type by original designation. Species misspelled rubroviolaceous on p. 18, correctly on p. 21. •Synonym of Scarus Forsskål 1775 -- (Bellwood 1994:67 [ref. 19116], Parenti & Randall 2000:54 [ref. 24943], Kottelat 2013:381 [ref. 32989]). Current status: Synonym of Scarus Forsskål 1775. Labridae: Scarinae. Scarus Forsskål [P. S.] 1775:x, 25 [Descriptiones animalium (Forsskål); ref. 1351] Masc. Scarus psittacus Forsskål (not of Linnaeus) 1775. Type by subsequent designation. Type designated by Swain 1883:274 [ref. 5966] and by Jordan & Gilbert 1882:938 [ref. 2476]. Not preoccupied by Scarus Gronow (not available). The family name Scaridae is retained on the basis of Randall & Parenti 2014:17 [ref. 33392], despite the incorporation in the Labridae by some authors. See comments on misidentified type species by Fricke 2008:50 [ref. 30182]. •Valid as Scarus Forsskål 1775 -- (Randall & Choat 1980 [ref. 5543], Randall & Bruce 1983:8 [ref. 5412], Richards & Leis 1984:544 [ref. 13668], Kishimoto in Masuda et al. 1984:218 [ref. 6441], Randall 1986:709 [ref. 5706], Bellwood & Choat 1989:16 et seq. Current status: Valid as Scarus Forsskål 1775. Labridae: Scarinae. Scarus Bleeker [P.] 1847:4, 9, 42, 44 [Verhandelingen van het Bataviaasch Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen. v. 22 [3]; ref. 317] Masc. Labrus cretensis Linnaeus 1758. On p. 9 as "Scarus. Vide sub genere Scaro"; otherwise as a genus. Type above as given by Jordan, but that species apparently not mentioned by Bleeker. Not Scarus of Gronow 1763 or Forsskål 1775. Dates to preprint in Dec. 1847, jounal in 1849. Kottelat (2013) disagrees; the "Scarus". Vide sub genera Scaro" refers to Valenciennes 1840. •In the synonymy of Sparisoma Swainson 1839 -- (Monod 1973:444 [ref. 7193], Parenti & Randall 2000:60 [ref. 24943]). •In the synonymy of Scarus Forsskål 1775 -- (Kottelat 2013:381 [ref. 32989]). Current status: Synonym of Scarus Forsskål 1775. Labridae: Scarinae. Thalassoma (subgenus of Zyrichthys) Swainson [W.] 1839:172, 224 [The natural history and classification v. 2; ref. 4303] Neut. Scarus purpureus Forsskål 1775. Type by monotypy. Subgenus should have been spelled Xyrichtys. Some species of Gomphosus Lacepède 1802, including the type species, are found to be nested within Thalassoma, so a generic rearrangement of both genera is needed, Bernardi et al. 2014:373 [ref. 27454]. •Synonym of Gomphosus Lacepède 1801 -- (Near et al. 2025:308 [ref. 42466]). •Valid as Thalassoma Swainson 1839 -- (Bauchot & Quignard 1973:441 [ref. 7204], Richards & Leis 1984:544 [ref. 13668], Araga in Masuda et al. 1984:205 [ref. 6441], Randall & Edwards 1985:14 [ref. 17448], Randall 1986:703 [ref. 5706], Quignard & Pras in Whitehead et al. 1986:940 [ref. 13676], Randall & Mee 1994:302 [ref. 21641], Allen 1995:75 [ref. 21960], Parenti & Randall 2000:44 [ref. 24943], Westneat 2001:3386 [ref. 26277], Westneat 2003:1703 [ref. 27105], Bernardi et al. 2004:369 [ref. 27454], Allen et al. 2006:1413 [ref. 29095], Kuiter 2010:183 [ref. 35285], Lipej & Dulčić 2010:55 [ref. 36649], Parenti & Randall 2011:36 [ref. 31299], Fricke et al. 2018:293 [ref. 35805], Golani & Fricke 2018:130 [ref. 36273], Brown et al. 2019:174 [ref. 36444], Fricke et al. 2019:238 [ref. 36673]). Current status: Valid as Thalassoma Swainson 1839. Labridae: Julidinae. Xenoscarops (subgenus of Scarops) Schultz [L. P.] 1958:16, 23 [Bulletin of the United States National Museum No. 214; ref. 3970] Masc. Scarus perrico Jordan & Gilbert 1882.
