quadratus, Scatophagus De Vis [C. W.] 1882:717 [The Queenslander, Brisbane 10 June 1882; ref. 30696] Cardwell, Queensland coast, Australia. Holotype (unique): QM I.1847. Also appeared as Scatophagus quadranus in De Vis 1884:455 [ref. 4898], but the appearence in the Brisbane Courier predates that description by 2 years (as researched by D. Hoese, emails 23 Jan. 2010). The spelling quadratus was probably intended in 1884 (based on "General body form rectangular)., but the spelling quadranus probably should be maintained as an unjustified emendation in prevailing usage. Specimen ZMUO J2357 is labeled a syntype but is not a type according to Pethon 1969:1, 6 [ref. 19268]. •Synonym of Scatophagus argus (Linnaeus 1766) -- (Parenti 2004:2 [ref. 27605], Allen et al. 2006:1722 [ref. 29090] as quadranus and dated 1884, Kottelat 2013:438 [ref. 32989] dates to p. 5). •Synonym of Prenes ocellatus (Klunzinger 1880) -- (Endruweit 2024:64 [ref. 41040]).
